6–7 February 2023 — On that early Monday morning, a catastrophic earthquake of 7.8 magnitude struck southeastern Türkiye, affecting vast regions from Kahramanmaraş to Hatay and beyond. It became one of the deadliest earthquakes the country had faced, deeply altering millions of lives.
In the heart of this devastation, a moment of humanity captured the world’s attention — a Turkish citizen embracing a member of the Polish ISAR (International Search and Rescue) team in heartfelt gratitude for their help in the rescue efforts.
A Global Call for Help: International Rescue in Türkiye
In the aftermath of the earthquakes, Türkiye’s call for international assistance was answered by countries from around the world. Over 105 nations and 16 international organizations pledged support, sending search and rescue teams, medical aid, equipment, and humanitarian support.
One such team was the Polish Heavy Urban Search and Rescue Unit (HUSAR), consisting of 76 firefighters, medics, 8 rescue dogs, and specialized equipment, deployed to southern Türkiye on the morning of the earthquakes.
