Turkey's Presidential Runoff Election Implements Propaganda Ban

Commencing at 6 p.m. on May 27, the prohibition on propaganda has been enforced for the upcoming second round of the presidential election scheduled for May 28. By the election law and the Supreme Election Council, no independent news or broadcasts relating to the elections will be allowed until 9 p.m. on election day.

As of 6 p.m. local time on May 27, a ban on propaganda has been instated throughout Turkey leading up to the second round of the presidential election, set to take place on May 28. Voting will commence at 8 a.m. on May 28 and conclude at 5 p.m. across the nation.

As per the election law and the decision of the Supreme Election Council (YSK), a 24-hour ban on propaganda will prohibit all news and broadcasts concerning the election and its results. This ban will be lifted one hour after the polls close.

During the initial round on May 14, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan officially secured 27,133,849 votes (49.52%), while the candidate of the main opposition bloc, Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, received 24,595,178 votes (44.88%). Sinan Oğan, the candidate of the ATA Alliance, obtained 2,831,239 votes (5.17%), and Muharrem İnce, who withdrew from the race before the election, garnered 235,783 votes (0.43%).

This marks the first time Turkey will witness a second round of the presidential election.

Media outlets will only be allowed to broadcast news and notifications from the YSK between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on May 28. All broadcasts will be unrestricted after 9 p.m., unless deemed necessary by the YSK, in which case broadcasts may be permitted before the designated time.

Consequently, the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from 6 a.m. on May 28 until midnight. Furthermore, all public entertainment venues will remain closed on election day.

Except for those responsible for ensuring security and public order, carrying firearms in residential areas will be prohibited.
